Why Croatian town Legrad selling houses for less than $1?

Croatian town Legrad is selling houses for less than $1 because of the rapidly declining population. The town was once heavily populated, forming the 2nd largest populated city in the Croatian territory.

The fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire around a century ago left it sidelined and led to a fall in population also.

The authority says that they are now receiving inquiries from countries like Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, Colombia. However, the cheap price of the town comes with conditions. The buyer must commit that he/she will stay in the town for a minimum of 15 years. They also must be under 40 and financially solvent.

The town has lush greenery and a soothing environment. However, the majority of the houses are in bad conditions, covered with mold, and in need of furbishing. The municipality has promised 25,000 kunas for the renovation of a house.
