Yaas cyclone update: How will the storm affect India?

The country is already going through a lot and after Cyclone Tauktae another cyclone is about to emerge and hit Bengal or Odisha.

Yaas is the second storm this week that is believed to be very destructive. The cyclone is predicted to form in the Bay of Bengal on May 22. The name ‘Yaas’ is given by Oman. This is going to be the first cyclone of 2021 formed in the Bay of Bengal.

Last year the powerful and catastrophic Amphan cyclone formed in May in the Bay of Bengal caused heavy damage in Kolkata, Odisha, and Bangladesh. The damage caused by Amphan was predicted to be around $13.7 billion (2020 USD).

Now the formation of Yaas can prove harmful to the states around the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to emerge in the upcoming 48 hours near the North Andaman Sea.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the formation of a low-pressure system on the east-central Bay of Bengal can give birth to the cyclone Yaas in the upcoming 48 hours. The present conditions are in favor of storm formation, and it can also develop into a catastrophic cyclone.

“In association with the strengthening and deepening of south-westerly winds over the region, the Southwest monsoon is likely to advance over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of the Bay of Bengal. Other atmospheric and ocean factors in addition to the sea surface temperatures are favorable for convection,” IMD said in a released statement.

Heavy rainfall is expected over Odisha, West Bengal, Meghalaya, and Assam which will commence between May 22 and 23. However, the atmospheric conditions are still promising for the advancement of the southwest monsoon over the south Andaman Sea on May 21. The temperature is also optimal and above normal by 1-2 degrees Celsius over the Bay of Bengal.

Fishermen in West Bengal and Odisha have been warned to not enter the sea after 21st may and those who are already in the sea are warned to return before 23rd May.

Cyclone Tauktae has also dreadfully damaged Gujarat and Maharashtra this week and killed over 13 people. Preparation is being done for Cyclone Yaas and the rescue missions will try to ensure as least damage as possible.
